If you find yourself looking for a new job for the first time in many years, you might be feeling a mix of anticipation, overwhelm and uncertainty regarding the process, expectations and direction.

Whether you are re-entering the job market or looking for a new opportunity, partnering with an executive search firm like Morton Philips can significantly streamline your journey. In this article we break down what you can expect from the application process and how to maximise your chances of success.

Understanding the Role of an Executive Search Firm

Executive Search Firms, such as Morton Philips, serve as a bridge between candidates and employers. We specialise in identifying and engaging top talent (both active and passive) for senior-level positions, globally. Confidentiality is a critical element to our success; we understand the sensitive nature of job searching and our success is based on our ability to protect not only your reputation but also our brand in the marketplace.

Although each process is specifically designed for the client and role in question, the core structure will remain similar.

  1. Executive Briefing Document

When you become aware of a suitable, interesting position that Morton Philips is working on (either through the advertisement, your network or if we have tapped you on the shoulder) we recommend you connect with us to receive a copy of the Executive Briefing Document/position description.

The Executive Briefing Document (EBD) details the position requirements and expectations, along with organisational information.

Once you have had the chance to review and digest the EBD you are welcome to submit your application online, preferably through the Morton Philips website. If you have additional specific questions about the role, we suggest calling the Morton Philips office and discussing your queries with the Consultant responsible for the role.

  1. Application

When applying for a position, regardless of the seniority of the role, we always recommend tailoring your CV and cover letter to that specific role. Highlight the key requirements of the role in the advert/EBD and write directly to them, emphasising your strength and aligned experience. Your application is your opportunity to impress upon the Consultant that you are suitable for the position and your application warrants further discussion.

When your application is registered on our system, you will receive an automatic acknowledgement email.

At this point we recommend that you ensure your LinkedIn profile is also up to date and in a position to add value to your application. The majority of consultants, in-house recruitment teams and employers will refer to your LinkedIn profile for additional information and in an attempt to gain a better understanding of your capabilities and career journey to date. Having an optimised LinkedIn profile can have considerable impact on decisions made by consultants and employers alike.

  1. Initial Assessment

Once the Morton Philips Consultant has reviewed the applications, they will contact those individuals who appear to meet the brief, as discussed with our partnering client. This will involve an initial telephone screening conversation during which the consultant will explore your experience, skills and motivations along with your career and salary aspirations – if an interstate move is required this will also be discussed. This is also your opportunity to address any additional questions you may have in relation to the position.

  1. Face to Face Meeting

Before ‘shortlisting a role’ (sending an initial list of suitable candidates to the client), the Morton Philips Consultant will meet with you in person or via Teams. During this meeting the Consultant will delve deeper into your experience, expectations, aspirations and suitability as they relate to the requirements of the position. The Consultant will want to get to know you better in an effort to ensure that you are an exceptional match for our partnering client - culturally, values wise and from a skills perspective.

  1. Short-list

The Morton Philips Consultant will then present our client with a shortlist of candidates who match the brief, as determined by the consultant and our client. It is from this shortlist of individuals and in conversation with the Consultant that the client will determine who they would like to interview.

  1. The Interview

One of the key benefits of working with an Executive Search Firm is the advice and preparation we offer with regards to interviewing with our clients – both informal and formal interview guidance. It is important to note that the process you are involved in may include multiple rounds of interviews, with various stakeholders. You will be advised well in advance of the steps involved in the specific process – communication is at the fore of all we do at Morton Philips.

If you are successful in being invited to interview, the Morton Philips Consultant will provide valuable insights into the structure of the interview, further details on the company you are interviewing with along with the positions and names of individuals who will be on the interview panel. Further to this the Consultant will discuss the culture, values and the strategic focus of the role in greater detail with you. This information is crucial in helping you to navigate the nuances of each interview stage, for tailoring your specific responses and demonstrating a genuine fit for the position.

  1. The Offer

Following your interview process the Morton Philips Consultant will be in continuous contact with you, communicating updates and advice. If you receive a job offer, Morton Philips will assist you with negotiation strategies, ensuring that you secure the appropriate terms and conditions for the position. Our expertise in this area can make a significant difference in your overall compensation and benefits.

  1. Ongoing Relationship

Once you have secured the position, the relationship with Morton Philips will continue. As part of our commitment to your success within the role, we stay in contact with you.
